Two people, including an Indian national, have gone missing after drowning in Wagmati river at Chandrapur-1 in Rautahat on Friday evening. Neither had been located as of Saturday afternoon. Security personnel and locals are continuing to search.
28-year-old Himanchu Kumar from Sitamarhi district, Bihar state, India, drowned and disappeared while swimming in Vagmati river in Nunthar, a tourist area of Chandrapur-1. According to the area police office Chandranigahpur, immediately after the incident, a team including DSP Rajkumar Rai arrived and started searching. DSP Rai said, "The search for Himanchu, who went missing after drowning, is continuing, but they have not been found yet."
Earlier on Friday evening, Manish Kumar Sahni, the seven-year-old son of local Mangalpur Vinod Sahni, also drowned while playing in the water between the Wagmati bridge and the barrage located in Chandrapur-1. According to the police, Manish was out with his 11-year-old son Sania, Kali Sahni, when he went missing while playing in the water in the evening. The police said that they are searching for both the children who went missing in Bagmati.
Every year people go missing while swimming in the Wagmati river. According to the police, even though swimming is prohibited in the area, tourists who have gone for sightseeing have been forced to swim in the river.
In the first week of June 2079, three Indian youths who went to visit Nunthar disappeared while swimming in the Wagmati river. 27-year-old Suman Sah, 30-year-old Mayank Agrawal and 30-year-old Golu Kumar, all residents of Kotbazar in Sitamarhi district of India, were swept away while swimming in the Wagmati river. Among them, Suman was immediately rescued by the locals and the dead bodies of Mayank and Golu were found 10 km south of the spot.
Located one kilometer north of the East-West Highway, Nunthar region is visited by a large number of Indian tourists. Every year people drown while swimming in the area.
