It has been six years since the door of the intensive care unit of the Snakebite Treatment Center in Nawalpur was locked. There is an ICU and a ventilator in the treatment room. However, there are no skilled doctors to use it. For the past six years, the treatment center has repeatedly called for notices to recruit skilled doctors, but no doctors have come to join.

Uddhav Paudel, president of the center, said that sometimes applications are not required, and sometimes selected doctors do not come to take appointments. During the month of snake infestation, a large number of patients come to the center daily. Among those who have been bitten by snakes, those with complex nature should be treated immediately with the help of ICU and ventilator.

President Paudel said that even though the equipment is ready at the treatment center, the disease has to be referred elsewhere due to the lack of manpower to operate it. Jagarnath Yadav, in-charge and health assistant of the center, said, "Patients who have been bitten by poisonous snakes and are in critical condition do not have time to travel."

In 2075, the center arranged ICU and ventilators for the treatment of patients who were seriously ill due to snakebite. Arjun Lama, a doctor working as a volunteer at that time, operated the device. However, on the night of June 23, 2076, a two-year-old girl from Hariwan in Sarlahi died at the center.

After the incident, the relatives of the girl vandalized the equipment in the intensive care unit of the center and assaulted the doctor Lama. After that incident, the center's intensive care unit was locked. Even though the vandalized equipment has been repaired from the budget of the provincial government and Lalbandi Municipality, the doctor still refuses to come.

Paudel, the president of the center, complained that the ICU and ventilator had to be kept unused for six years due to lack of skilled manpower. The center had asked for applications only last March to appoint doctors who know how to operate ICU and ventilators. Five doctors also filled the application. However, he says that he did not come to take the appointment of a passed doctor.

Four years ago, a doctor and two health workers working at the treatment center were sent to Dharan for training.   'They didn't dare to operate the ICU and ventilator,' President Paudel said.  Patients who have been bitten by a snake and brought to a critical condition should be treated immediately with the help of ICU and ventilator.

Since the treatment center is in an open place, a crowd of locals and patients' relatives reaches the treatment room. President Paudel says that due to this, doctors cannot treat independently. Currently eight health workers including one MBBS doctor are working in this center. Two health workers of the Nepali Army are working 24 hours a day for free.
