During the seven months of the current financial year, a significant amount of allopathic medicine has been imported through the Birganj route. During the seven months from July to January, medicines worth 16.79 billion rupees were imported from India and third countries.

According to the data of Birganj Customs Office, the import of allopathic medicines has increased by 17 percent in the current financial year compared to the same period of the last financial year.

During the same period of the last financial year, allopathic medicines worth 14 billion 41 crore rupees were imported . Comparatively, compared to the last financial year, allopathic medicines worth 2 billion 38 crore rupees have been imported in the current financial year.

Senior Vice President of Nepal Pharmacists Association Parsa Bishwaraj Gautam says that although indigenous drugs occupy about 60 percent of the country's total drug market, foreign drugs still account for 40 percent of the market.

Gautam says that the main reason for this is that some medicines are still not produced by the indigenous pharmaceutical industries. "Especially ventilators and drugs used in ICU are not produced in the country," he said, "for this, dependence on foreign drugs is mandatory."

There are currently 113 allopathic medicine manufacturing industries operating in Nepal. However, some medicines have not been produced by these industries. Nepal imports most of the medicines from India. After India, medicines are imported from Bangladesh, Singapore etc. .

Some of the drug shops in the border market have been illegally importing and distributing drugs that have not been approved by the Drug Administration Department. Some doctors have the tendency to prescribe such medicines and they have got relief from illegally imported Indian medicines.
