The construction company Rasuwa Construction Pvt. Ltd. Kathmandu has announced that the permanent bridge over the Karnali River, connecting Sankatti Ghat of Geruwa Rural Municipality–2 and wards 5 and 7 of Tikapur Municipality in Kailali, has been completed and brought into operation.
With the bridge now in operation, transportation services between Bardiya and Kailali have resumed. The bridge, which began construction on the 17th of Poush, 2079, under the Bridge Project Branch, Bridge Sector Nepalgunj, was built at a cost of 1.18 billion rupees.
The bridge, which was scheduled to be completed on the 17th of Ashoj, 2083, was finished about three months ahead of schedule. The contract states that the construction company will be responsible for maintenance for five years.
According to Prabhakar Pyakurel, Chief Accountant of Rasuwa Construction Pvt. Ltd. Bardiya, the bridge is 752.62 meters long. The bridge has 14 foundations with 13 spans, is 7.5 meters wide, and has 1.5-meter-wide footpaths on both sides for pedestrians, he said.
With the construction of the bridge, the route from Bardiya to Tikapur in Kailali has become much shorter. The distance from Sankatti Ghat to Tikapur is about 7 kilometers. The construction of paved roads in Tikapur and Sankatti Ghat is still pending. On the Bardiya side, the Road Infrastructure Development Office, Bardiya, has constructed a paved road.
Previously, the bridge at Sattighat, connecting Chisapani of Karnali and Rajapur Kailali, was completed in 2073, after construction began in 2050. Chairperson of Geruwa Rural Municipality, Jaman Singh KC, said that the construction of the bridge has benefited about 200,000 residents of Rajapur in Bardiya and Geruwa Municipality, and the Tikapur area of Kailali.
Three bridges—at Sankatti Ghat, Sattighat, and Chisapani—have now been constructed over the Karnali River, which flows from Bardiya to the Indian border, covering a distance of about 50 kilometers.
