Forest officials have cut the culvert under construction on the road leading to the suspension bridge in Barbardiya Municipality-4. The employees of the Division Forest Office cut seven culverts under construction on Thursday.

As soon as they received information about the cutting of the culverts, the forest officials were scattered after the local public obstructed them. The road leading to the suspension bridge on the Babai River in Bairiyaghat has a pothole, making it difficult for the public to travel during the rainy season.

Radheshyam Tharu, a resident of Bairiya village in Barbardiya Municipality-4, said that the forest officials tried to demolish the culvert while constructing the culvert on the road that has been in use since ancient times. ‘The road on the border of Baghaila and Jirah community forests has been in use since tradition,’ he said, ‘The construction of a culvert on the ancestral path has been going on since last week. Now the forest officials are trying to stop it in a domineering manner.’ We are a forest that was planted by our villagers in 2044 BS.’ He said that preparations are being made to go to the Division Forest Office on Friday by locals from three or four villages.

The construction of the culvert has started in coordination with the NGO, keeping in mind the needs of the general public, as there is a hole on the road leading to the suspension bridge. ‘We had started the construction of the culvert in coordination with the relevant community forest, and the RCC slope of the culvert has already been laid,’ said Deputy Chief Pandey, ‘but on Thursday, without any information, the forest staff cut the culvert under construction.’ Deputy Chief Pandey said that the culvert had already been cut when she reached the spot after being informed by the locals.

Senior Forest Officer Ramgopal Chaudhary of the Division Forest Office said that the forest staff cut the culvert because they had constructed the culvert without permission. ‘The Division Forest Office had no information about the construction of the culvert,’ he said. ‘When the news came that a culvert was being constructed without permission in the forest area, the forest staff cut the culvert to stop it.’
