The Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have arrested 222 people with drugs from last July to 30 Jestha. Including 1 woman and 9 foreigners.
During the 11-month period, brown sugar, marijuana, hashish, opium, capsules, Corex and other drugs were also seized from the drug addicts arrested, said DSP Resham Bohora, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Bardiya. He said that in the last fiscal year, 215 drug addicts, including three foreign men, were arrested with drugs.
Police said that drug addicts have started being arrested after the local administration launched a search campaign two years ago to control illegal drugs smuggled from India. Bardiya, which is 83 km from the Indian border, is one of the districts with the highest drug trafficking. These include Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality, Gulariya and Madhuban Municipality.
Brown sugar is freely available in the Indian market at cheap prices, so Nepali youths go there, said Himalaya Tripathi, chairman of Badhaiyatal Rural Municipality. He also said that a public awareness program has been organized at the school level in coordination with the police to prevent this.
Even if up to 10 grams of brown sugar is seized in India, no case will be filed. Chief District Officer Gogan Bahadur Hamal said that he has raised the issue with his Indian counterpart in the counter part meeting to control drugs. Locals say that if Indian security personnel take strict action, drug trafficking will be controlled.
‘Indian security personnel have been arresting drug dealers from the border area from time to time,’ said Prajiya Hamal, ‘If the Indian police take further strict action, drug trafficking will be reduced.’
