With the onset of summer, the number of patients coming to the district hospital for treatment of fever, diarrhea, stomach and headache, diabetes, high blood pressure and other ailments has been increasing. Acting Superintendent Dr. Manu Dahit said that with the onset of summer, 500 more patients have been coming to the OPD service of Bardiya Hospital for treatment, except on public holidays.
He said that the number of patients admitted to the emergency room is also increasing because the OPD service is closed on public holidays. On Wednesday alone, Health Assistant of the Emergency Service Ajit Chaudhary said that 64 patients have come for treatment in the last 24 hours. He said that there were problems in treatment as there were only 7 beds in the emergency room. Some patients are being treated at the Kuruwa house and some have been discharged.
The number of people coming to the hospital for treatment has increased as people started falling ill due to the hot air and scorching sun in the afternoon, said Nimitti Mesu Dahit. Earlier, about 300 patients used to come to the OPD service for treatment. Doctors say that the pressure of patients has increased especially when the OPD service is closed due to the long public holidays.
Kamlesh Singh of Sirkohiya, Gularia Municipality-3, went to the District Hospital, Bardiya on Thursday for a regular health check-up of his pregnant wife. When he reached the hospital, the OPD (outpatient service) was closed due to the government's public holiday. He complained that he did not receive treatment and spent Rs. 400 on commuting from home in an autorickshaw. Most patients are not aware that the OPD will not operate during public holidays. More than a hundred patients came for treatment on the first day of the public holiday, but they returned empty-handed when the OPD service was closed.
Jit Bahadur Tharu, a heart patient from Madhuban Municipality-9, paid Rs 500 and reached the district hospital by renting an auto rickshaw. He did not know that the OPD would also be closed on public holidays. He said that he came to get additional treatment from the doctor and get medicine, but he returned feeling only sad. Service recipients have demanded that the OPD be open for at least 2 hours on public holidays as well.
Maiku Lodh of Gularia-10 said that it is necessary for the OPD to be open for at least 2 hours on holidays for patients.
