Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chet Narayan Acharya has urged farmers to engage in production without leaving the land barren.
Inaugurating the Praganna Canal Cleaning Program on Tuesday in the Rapti Valley (Deukhuri) on the eve of Irrigation Day 2082, he clarified that the state will manage irrigation and that the provincial government is with the farmers in their problems. He informed that the real problems of the farmers have been identified and a plan is being made according to the resources to solve them.
Referring to the Deukhuri region as a storehouse of grain, Chief Minister Acharya expressed concern over the recent trend of land remaining barren and declining production. He urged farmers to be active in vegetable farming and said that production increase is necessary to reduce dependence on external vegetables in the local market. Stating that despite having irrigation facilities, the expected returns have not been obtained, he urged everyone to be production-oriented.
The program was jointly organized by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation and the Praganna Kulo Irrigation System Main Coordination Committee, Deukhuri, with the main slogan ‘Agriculture as a Basis: Improvement in Irrigation’.
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Sita Sharma Chaudhary said at the program that the government is moving forward with determination in expanding irrigation facilities. She stated that irrigation plays an important role in increasing production and productivity and informed that irrigation facilities have started reaching even barren lands.
Chairman of the Praganna Kulo Irrigation System Main Coordination Committee, Tankanath Chaudhary, said that problems have been seen in the irrigation system due to uncontrolled excavation in the Rapti River. He stressed the need to pay attention to the protection of the source area and mentioned that there is a problem of water not reaching the canals when the river level deepens. Currently, irrigation facilities are available on 5,800 hectares of land through the irrigation project.
Secretary of the Ministry, Churna Bahadur Oli, informed at the program that the area to be irrigated is gradually expanding. He said that the government has been supportive in maximizing the benefits through the conservation and utilization of traditional canals and irrigation sources.
In the program, Secretary of the Praganna Canal Irrigation System Main Coordination Committee, Shaniram Chaudhary, Chairman of the Wadkapath Canal Irrigation System Main Coordination Committee, Raghunandan Chaudhary, and leading farmer Hallu Prasad Chaudhary, among others, informed about the problems faced by farmers.
