Saddam Hussain Fakir, 19, of Mayadevi Rural Municipality-6, who set fire to the Kapilvastu prison after the Genji movement and protests, has been arrested on charges of motorcycle theft.

He had been stealing motorcycles in a group and escaped from prison on the morning of Bhadra 25. Acting Police Spokesperson and Inspector Deepak Kunwar said that after he escaped from prison, he went to court and set fire to his body, saying that he would destroy his evidence.

The police became active after a series of motorcycles were stolen from the border Nepali markets of Maryadpur, Krishnanagar and Taulihawa. After motorcycles started going missing every day, Naike Fakir was arrested on the basis of CCTV footage while stealing motorcycles from Maryadpur. After he was arrested, the motorcycle gang itself was caught. Hussain had formed a gang to steal motorcycles. After Fakir was arrested, the police have also recovered five stolen motorcycles with Nepali and Indian number plates.

Along with Fakir, the motorcycle thieves included Shubham Khadka, 22, of Kapilvastu Municipality-3, Ejaz Khan, 22, of Krishnanagar Municipality-8, and Mohammad Salman, 19, of Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, India, and all of them have been arrested, said District Police Chief Superintendent Santosh Acharya. Earlier, the district court had sentenced Naike Fakir to one year in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000 for the crime of arms and ammunition. He was sent to prison on November 20, 2018.

The police have said that the four people arrested, including Naike, are being investigated by the court for theft and robbery under the Criminal Code, 2074 BS.
