The Supreme Court has honored Police Constable Sangeeta Adhikari, who played a key role in saving the Ghorahi District Court from fire and vandalism during the Genji movement on Bhadra 24.
Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut awarded and honored Adhikari with a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and a certificate at a program organized at the Ghorahi District Court on Tuesday. While awarding the award, Raut said that he felt proud that it was possible to save the court only with the efforts of one policeman.
Raut said that he was touched by the fact that Adhikari rose above his job and responsibility and tried to save the court. ‘I was impressed by his continuous efforts to save the court.’ It touched my heart,’ he said, ‘This was a job different from normal duty. There was love for the judiciary.’ That is why I wanted to go and honor him myself.'
He expressed the view that all police, security personnel and other civil servants should act with responsibility like officers in such complex situations. 'Everyone should learn from officers. Everyone should take the message of how to perform their duties when the country is in trouble,' he said, 'It is everyone's responsibility to save the country's important structures. I am happy to honor officers.'
The officer had forced the protesters who started burning and vandalizing the district court to retreat by explaining and persuading them. Adhikari, a resident of Chainpur, Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City-9, was a police assistant constable at the time of saving the court. Appreciating her role, she was promoted to police constable after the protest.
The protesters returned after the officer's continuous insistence. Due to which, although there was some damage to the court, much damage was avoided, said District Court Chief Justice Prakash Prasad Pandit. Other police officers who were deployed for court security during the protest were also honored at the program.
