A special squad has been mobilized to control forest fires in Arghakhanchi, which is plagued by fire incidents during the summer season.

The 12-member forest fire control special squad will work until Jestha to spread awareness among the community about fire control, reduce the risk by collecting leaf litter, and deploy mini fire engines to control fires if they break out, said Keshar Khadka, information officer at the Division Forest Office.

He said that the squad is responsible for spreading awareness among the community and making it a zero-fire district. There are 42 fire-prone areas in the district. They have received fire control materials, Iperbloor and other materials.

In Arghakhanchi, which is plagued by fire incidents during the summer season, forest fire incidents and loss of life and property were reduced last year due to awareness programs. ‘This year, there is an effort to make the community aware,’ he said, ‘the team teaches ways to prevent fires.’ 

Last year, the Forest Office had two Gandharvas playing the sarangi and singing songs in 61 wards to make the community aware and conscious.  Work was also done in the forests and jungles to make compost from leaf litter. 

Arghakhanchi has a forest area of ​​73,207 hectares. Of which the area of ​​community forests is 34,342 hectares.  There are 466 forest groups in the district. Of the 6 local levels in the district, Shitaganga Municipality has the largest forest area of ​​47,364 hectares.  Malarani Rural Municipality has the least with 2,870.31 hectares. According to the Division Forest Office, there were 3,297 fire incidents in the district in the 24-year period from 2000-2024. Of which, 75,490.32 hectares of forest were affected by fire.
