Deposits of 89 candidates confiscated in Kapilvastu

The District Election Office has stated that the deposits of 31 out of 34 candidates in Kapilvastu Constituency No. 1 have been confiscated. Similarly, the deposits of 25 out of 28 candidates in Constituency No. 2 and 33 out of 36 candidates in Constituency No. 3 have been confiscated.

The deposits of 89 candidates have been confiscated in the district. Only nine candidates, three each from three constituencies, have saved their deposits.

There were 98 candidates, including parties and independents, in all three constituencies of the district. There is a provision that if a candidate gets less than 10 percent of the total votes cast, their deposits will be confiscated. In Constituency No. 1, the deposits of 31 out of 34 candidates have been confiscated. Similarly, in Constituency No. 2, 25 out of 28 and in Constituency No. 3, 33 out of 36 have been confiscated, according to the District Election Office.

The deposits of UML candidate and Constituent Assembly member Bishram Prasad Chaudhary from Constituency No. 1 and UML candidate and former National Assembly member Driganarayan Pandey from Constituency No. 2 have also been confiscated. Chaudhary got 7,981 votes and Pandey got 7,357 votes. Similarly, the deposit of Rastriya Mukti Party candidate and former Minister of State Ishwar Dayal Mishra from Constituency No. 3 has also been forfeited. Mishra had received only 5,017 votes. Similarly, Nepali Communist Party candidate Krishna Kunwar from Constituency No. 1 and candidate Ehsan Ahmed Khan from Constituency No. 3 could not save their deposit. Kunwar received 4,616 votes while Khan received 4,251 votes.

There is a legal provision that candidates for members of the House of Representatives must submit a deposit of Rs 10,000 each to fill out their applications. According to Section 159 of the House of Representatives Member Election Guidelines, 2074, the deposit amount deposited by a candidate who receives less than 10 percent of the total votes cast in the election will be forfeited under Section 22.
