'I saved my husband from a leopard by shouting loudly'

”I had nothing but a rope to tie the grass. When I saw my husband fighting with a leopard in the wheat field right before my eyes, my senses failed me. I panicked and shouted loudly, shaking the rope. After a while, the leopard left my husband and ran towards the wheat field.”

Leopards have attacked two places here in one day. Aditya Chaudhary, 6, of Kalabanjar, Rajapur Municipality-10, was killed and three others were injured in a leopard attack on Wednesday. Similarly, Nasrudin Gujjar, 50, of Sangam Basti, Gulariya Municipality-2, was injured in a leopard attack.

Nasrudin and his wife Chhimiya Gujjar had gone to cut grass in their own field near the village on Wednesday. Both the husband and wife were walking in the wheat field, talking in their own voices. While walking in the field, both of them saw wheat falling. A leopard was sitting there. ‘Someone cut the grass in the wheat and the wheat fell,’ Chhimiya told her husband and moved forward, ‘We had no suspicion of a leopard, when I looked back, I saw that the leopard had grabbed my husband by the neck and thrown him into the wheat.’

She had nothing with her except a rope to tie the grass. "I had nothing but a rope to tie the grass. When I saw my husband fighting with the leopard in the wheat field, my senses failed me. I panicked and shouted loudly, shaking the rope. After a while, the leopard left my husband and ran towards the wheat field," she said.

She said that the flashback of seeing her husband and the leopard fighting in the wheat field is heartbreaking. The injured Gujjar has injuries to his neck and waist. According to the police, he is being treated at the Bardiya Hospital.

The leopard attacked and injured him while he was playing in the courtyard of his house. When he was immediately taken to the Bardiya Hospital for treatment, the doctors examined him and declared him dead.

Kritiman Tharu, 41, Dhaniram Tharu, 41, and Shyamlal Tharu, 38, of Kalabanjar, Rajapur Municipality-10, who went to chase away the leopard, were injured. They are being treated in Nepalgunj and are said to be in a stable condition.

Including Wednesday's incident, nine people have died in leopard attacks, one in tiger attacks and one in elephant attacks since Shrawan of the current fiscal year, according to the Division Forest Office.
