The challenge to the eradication goal has been added as new leprosy patients are being detected every year in Banke. In the first six months of the current fiscal year, 86 new leprosy patients have been found in the district. Last year, 58 patients were found during the same period.

According to the Skin Disease Treatment Center of Shining Hospital, which is run by INF Nepal, which has been identifying and treating leprosy in the district, there is a problem in eradicating the disease due to discrimination in the society against such patients. Mangal Bahadur Tharu, in-charge of the center, said that the number of new patients in the district is increasing every year. According to him, in the first six months of the current year, the highest number of patients were found in Banke - 36, Bardiya - 12, Jajarkot, Rukum and Kailali - 5/5, Achham - 3, Dailekh - 2, and Dang, Pyuthan, Rolpa and Salyan - 1/1. Similarly, the disease has also been found in 14 Indian citizens living in Nepal.

Out of 342 people who came to this hospital for examination from different districts, 86 new patients were found. Rajkumar Chaudhary, focal person of Virat Medical Trust, which is conducting research in the field of leprosy, said that the disease is increasing at the community level in Banke. The hospital has stated that 50-60 patients come to the OPD of Shining Hospital daily with various skin problems, and on an average, one leprosy patient is diagnosed every 2-3 days.

The hospital has been providing leprosy and skin disease-related services to about 16,000 people every year. The hospital has stated that the open border and lack of timely treatment have led to problems in diagnosing it.
