Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City has been declared the country's first gender-based violence-controlled municipality. Ghorahi Sub-Metropolitan City was declared a gender-based violence-controlled city on Thursday after completing 26 steps and 32 indicators as stipulated in the Procedure for Declaring a Gender-Based Violence-Controlled City, 2081 BS.
The basis for the declaration was prepared after the District Coordination Committee and the provincial government monitored and found that all the processes, stages and indicators of the declaration of gender-based violence control were completed . Only 0.01 percent of violence incidents were recorded in Ghorahi .
Lumbini Province Chief Minister Chetnarayan Acharya formally declared the declaration of the city as gender-based violence control by presenting the certificate to Mayor Narulal Chaudhary and Deputy Mayor Huma Kumari DC.
Addressing the program, Acharya said that the work done by Ghorahi is a great social achievement and a model work of the local government . He also expressed confidence that this declaration will send a positive message to the society to reduce gender-based violence .

Gender-based violence control committees have been formed and are active under the chairmanship of the mayor at the sub-metropolitan level and under the chairmanship of the ward chairperson at the ward level to control and implement gender-based violence. Motikumari Bishwakarma, Head of the Women, Children and Social Development Branch, said that regular work is being done to reduce gender-based violence by arranging focal persons against gender-based violence in sub-metropolitan cities, ward offices, schools, health institutions and toll development organizations.
She said that toll development organizations have formed sub-committees to control gender-based violence and hold awareness-raising discussions and reviews against gender-based violence in regular meetings and programs including weekly sanitation.
Various stakeholders have signed a commitment letter to establish a gender-violence-controlled city and have supported and collaborated for the sustainability of this campaign. District Coordination Committee Chief Nityanand Sharma said that the declaration of a gender-violence-controlled city will help in building an egalitarian society by transforming all kinds of inequality, discriminatory thinking and structures.
According to the 2078 BS national census, there are 49,761 households in Ghorahi Sub-metropolitan City. The total population here is 2530. Of which 46.8 percent are men and 53.2 percent are women. Ghorahi was declared the country's first child-friendly sub-metropolitan city after the federal system on Chaitra 23, 2078 BS.
