Preparations are underway for a festival to brand fish produced in Siyari Rural Municipality of Rupandehi.

The Siyari Rural Municipality has stated that it is planning to hold a festival to further encourage farmers and for marketing as it is the municipality that produces a lot of fish in the country.

In a discussion organized in the rural municipality on Sunday, it was informed that along with fish, other agricultural products and dairy products of Siyari will also be promoted in the festival.

Rural Municipality Chairman Thaneshwor Ghimire said that since fisheries have made the municipality known throughout the country, the festival is being held to promote such products. According to him, even now, fish here accounts for 25 percent of the total production in the country. ‘The fish dishes prepared here are also becoming popular,’ he said, ‘Many people come to eat fish sukuti and pickles.’

He said that the municipality has planned to hold a promotional program to brand fish nationally and internationally. Stating that fish is currently entering the country in packets from abroad, he said that the aim is to operate an industry here and export fish here. ‘The festival aims to focus on fish,’ he said, ‘and other agricultural products will also be promoted.’

The Butwal Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the co-organizer of the festival to be held in rural areas. The association will help organize and promote the festival.

Butwal Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Hari Prasad Aryal said that although preparations were made to organize the festival in the first week of Magh, it will be postponed due to weather and other reasons. ‘We will promote fish and fish dishes,’ he said, ‘The association’s officials will work hard to make the festival a success.’

Shobhakhar Pandey, Fisheries Development Officer of the Fish Zone Program being run in the municipality, said that there are 1,247 hectares of water bodies within the rural municipality. Out of this, 1,112 hectares are under the Fish Zone Program. ‘Now the farmers here are enjoying the produce,’ he said, ‘now it is necessary to market their produce.’ He said that there is also a shortage of fisheries development officers for fish production in the municipality. Now, he said, farmers need to be connected to the fish market.

Chief Administrative Officer of the rural municipality, Laxman Pandey, said that Siyari rural municipality is self-sufficient in fish and dairy production. ‘The festival is being organized to further motivate farmers,’ he said, ‘The rural municipality has been playing a role in branding fish. To make this more effective, we are going to organize the festival by including the agricultural sector within the municipality.’

The discussion was attended by ward chairmen of the municipality, fish farmers, tourism entrepreneurs, members of cooperatives, representatives of political parties, social leaders and the general public.
