A statue of Karna Bahadur Rana, a brave Gorkha soldier of World War I and recipient of the Victoria Cross, has been installed in Satyawati Rural Municipality-8, Bharse, known as the village of Lahures.
The British government awarded Rana the highest military honor, the Victoria Cross, for his bravery against the German army during World War I. Rana's statue has been installed in the premises of the Varse Gallery, which was built with the aim of keeping the history of the Lahures alive.
Karna Bahadur Rana, a resident of Phoksing, Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-7 in the district, was born in 1898. He received the Victoria Cross from King George V of Britain in 1919 at the young age of 19. Rana died in 1973 at the age of 74.
Lieutenant Kul Bahadur Budhathoki, the architect of the statue, said that the installation of Rana's statue is a tribute to all the deceased and living Lahures. Locals have expressed gratitude to Budhathoki, saying that the statue was installed on his personal initiative for the preservation of history.
The statue was built at a cost of about Rs. 1.6 million under the leadership of the Varse Bhupu Sangh. Gulmeli sculptor Yama Bahadur Thapa took more than a year to create the statue of Rana. Nar Bahadur Budhathoki, treasurer of the Barse Bhupusangh, informed that the statue was built through personal investment as he did not receive any formal honor from the Nepal government.
