A survey conducted in three major forest conservation areas of Gulmi has found 30 new species of birds for the first time, revealing the potential for bird tourism in the district.

With the discovery of 30 new bird species, the total number of bird species recorded in the district has reached 355 so far.

The recent bird census conducted by the Nepal Bird Conservation Association in the district has found 30 new species of birds. 

The birds were found in the Resunga, Madane and Thaple Satyawati forest conservation areas of the district, informed Shambhu Bhattarai, Project Officer of the Nepal Bird Conservation Association Gulmi. Project Officer Bhattarai said that 25 new species of birds were found in the Resunga Forest Conservation Area, Madane Forest Conservation Area and Thaple Satyawati Forest Conservation Area during the survey.

Earlier, bird surveys were conducted twice a year in the Resunga and Madane forest conservation areas, but this time, a bird survey was also conducted in the Thaple Satyawati forest conservation area. It is said that the newly found bird species include the Tilhari, the Thick-throated Flower Cuckoo, the Umachanchar, the Tibilche, the Muralide Dhikure Bhakur, the Blue Laghutpankha, the Hatchur Chanchar, the Halimukh, and the Sim Chicken. 

Six species of rare birds in the world are found in Gulmi. These include the Chirkali, Ranamatta Mahachil, Dangar Ghidha, White Ghidha, Golden Ghidha and Gomayo Mahachil in the Resunga Forest Reserve. The Thorny Vulture has been recorded in the Resunga, Madane and Thaple Satyawati Forest Reserves.

The Nepal Bird Conservation Association has stated that out of the 903 species of birds found in Nepal, about 40 percent of them have been found in Gulmi. According to bird surveys conducted by the association at different times, 276 species have been found in the Resunga Forest Reserve, 289 species in the Madane Forest Reserve and 196 species in the Thaple Satyawati Forest Reserve.

According to the latest survey conducted in all three forest reserves, a total of 355 species of birds have been recorded.

The association has been running programs to support the locals associated with the forest area in their livelihood along with the conservation and enhancement of forests. Resunga Municipality Mayor Khildhwaj Panthi said that there is great potential for bird tourism in the district.
