The construction of housing for 28 flood-affected families in Gulariya Municipality has reached the final stage.
Earthquake and flood-resistant houses are being constructed at low cost for 28 flood-affected families, including 27 in Sarjunadi Tapara, Gulariya-8 and 1 in Ward 9. In 2071 and 2074, the flood of the Babai River completely washed away the houses of Sarjunadi Tapara settlement after breaking the dam at Sangambasti in Gulariya Municipality-2. 28 houses are being constructed at a cost of 9.8 million, including 56 houses from Gulariya Municipality (125 thousand from the municipality for each house and 75 thousand from the Janata Suraksha Program for tin) and 42 from Caritas Nepal. Last year, the municipality and Caritas Nepal also constructed and handed over safe houses to 31 flood-affected families in Tapara. Laxmi Sunar Bandiya of Gulariya-8 said that she was happy that the houses were constructed after a long time. ‘We are earning a living by working as daily wage laborers, it was not possible to build a house with our own investment due to poverty,’ she said, ‘We are happy that the house is being built even though it is late.’
Municipal Mayor Muktinath Yadav said that houses are being built for flood victims who have been living in tents for a long time under the coordination of Gulariya Municipality and the Emergency Livelihood and Safe Housing Construction Program run by Caritas Nepal.
The total cost of a house is estimated at 582,506, said Narendra KC, Program Coordinator of Caritas Nepal Field Office. ‘The municipality has a budget of 200,000 and 150,000 for each house,’ said Coordinator KC. ‘The labor donation and self-investment of the community is 232,506.’ A kitchen and veranda are under construction in the two-room house with a zinc roof.
