Rice from government-owned food companies has been sitting in warehouses unsold due to higher prices than those from the private sector.

The previous year's rice has been left unsold in the food management and trading company limited's main branch office, Rajapur.

The company, which is fully owned by the government, has been buying farmers' rice at the support price, producing rice and sending it to districts including Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces. Recently, as the demand for coarse and medium rice has decreased in those districts, it has been left in the warehouse.

The food industry buys rice from farmers at the support price set by the government, while the private sector buys it at a cheaper price. The cost of producing rice by the food industry is high, so the price is high.
The private sector has stopped selling rice for food as rice is available at a cheaper price than the government-owned food industry. Similarly, food rice has been left in the warehouse due to unhindered entry from the international market.

25,000 quintals of rice produced from rice purchased in the previous year are in the warehouse, said Kamal Raj Pandey, chief of the food management and trading company Rajapur. ‘More than 20,000 quintals of rice from the previous year are yet to be threshed.’ Chief Pandey said, ‘If the relevant bodies create an environment where citizens can get food by providing concessions, it is expected that rice will be consumed.’ As the warehouse is not empty, we are temporarily storing the purchased rice after requesting the local level for warehouse management.’

25,000 quintals of rice for food purposes were left in the warehouse.

37,900 quintals of rice were purchased in the fiscal year 081/082. The company stated that 30 quintals of rice produced from rice purchased in the previous year were sent to the Himalayan and hilly districts in the last fiscal year.

This year, the support price for mato paddy has been fixed at Rs 3,463 and for medium paddy at Rs 3,628. The company has stated that it has received a quota of 30,000 quintals of paddy purchase across the district in the current fiscal year. Paddy is currently being purchased in Gulariya, Jayanagar of Barbardiya, Shantibazaar of Geruwa Rural Municipality and the head office in Rajapur. The company has stated that 15,170 quintals of paddy have been purchased till Monday.
