This year, rice production in Bardiya has increased by about 6 percent due to favorable weather conditions. Farmers have received relief this year after rice production was affected by excessive rains, floods, and droughts in the past.

This year, farmers were very worried due to insufficient rainfall in the first week of Asar and Shrawan months. Local farmers say that the favorable rainfall that followed has increased paddy production. Paddy is cultivated on 50,100 hectares in Bardiya.

Kamala Adhikari, head of the Integrated Agriculture and Livestock Development Office, Bardiya, said that the paddy production has increased by about 6 percent when taking data from all eight municipalities of the district. ‘It is estimated that paddy production will increase by about 6 percent when taking 95 percent of the data,’ she said, ‘5 percent of the data is yet to be taken.’

Last year, the paddy production in Bardiya was 225,450 metric tons. Agricultural technicians say that adequate rains occurred on time and the improved variety of seeds have resulted in good yields this year. Shaukat Ali Gaddi, a farmer from Gularia Municipality-11, said that the paddy production has improved somewhat due to irrigation through pumps in areas without irrigation facilities.

However, the rain that fell at the time of rice import after Tihar has caused minimal damage. The Integrated Agriculture and Livestock Development Office has stated that most of the farmers have already imported rice, so there has been no significant impact. Farmer Siraj Khan of Gulariya Municipality-9 said that after importing rice due to favorable weather, he is preparing to sow wheat and mustard.

‘Last year, production decreased due to lack of rain and floods during the import of rice,’ he said. Local farmer Devraj Chauhan said that it is necessary to complete the Bheri-Babai diversion as soon as possible to provide relief to farmers who depend on rainwater. Farmers say that rice production here will increase further if the government provides timely fertilizer and irrigation facilities.
