67 households in Sarjunadi Tapara, Gulariya Municipality-8 have started commercial vegetable farming. 67 households affiliated with the Shiva Agricultural Group and the Model Women's Group in Gulariya Municipality-8 have started commercial vegetable farming.

They said that they started farming by managing land on rent according to their personal capacity. The family has started cultivating vegetables such as carrots, radishes and potatoes on about 75 acres.

With the financial support of Caritas Nepal Italiana, coordination of Gulariya Municipality and the Emergency Livelihood and Safe Housing Construction Project for Flood-affected Families run by Caritas Nepal Field Office Bardiya, the flood-affected families have started cultivating vegetables.

In BS 2071 and BS 2073, the flood caused by the collapse of the Babai River dam in Sangam Basti of Gulariya Municipality-2 completely affected the Sarjunadi Tapra squatter settlement.

Balakram Lodh of Gulariya Municipality-8, who was previously farming as usual, said. ‘I have now planted potatoes in 7 kattas and carrots in 3 kattas,’ he said. ‘I feel that the financial burden has reduced after the organization provided seeds.’

Rajesh Yadav of Gulariya Municipality-7, who planted potatoes in 12 kattas alone after receiving seeds and facilities, said. ‘The place where I am cultivating is one kilometer away from Gulariya Bazaar,’ he said. ‘There is no particular problem for marketing.’

Urmila Gupta, chairperson of the Model Women’s Agriculture Group, said that she started potato farming by renting two kattas of land to encourage the sisters of the community. ‘We are planning to expand the vegetable farming that we started this year,’ she said.

Caritas Nepal’s program coordinator Narendra KC said that 67 people from the two groups were directly involved in agriculture and provided necessary materials including vegetable seeds free of cost with the aim of making them self-reliant. "We have provided 48 quintals of potato seeds and fertilizer," he said. "After this, we plan to provide them with other vegetable seeds, irrigation pipes, and necessary training along with pesticides."
