A pair of elephants from Chitwan National Park will be sent to Qatar via a charter flight in the next month. The National Parks Department has informed that all preparations for this are in the final stages.

The elephants will be transported to Qatar from Bhairahawa Airport by chartered aircraft in separate iron cages. One iron cage has been constructed in Chitwan National Park to house the elephants. Another is under construction.

According to Haribhadra Acharya, Senior Ecologist of the National Park Department, Nepal is going to gift two elephants to Qatar as per the agreement signed between the Nepal-Qatar governments two years ago. The Qatar government will bear all the expenses of transporting the elephants.

The elephants Khagendra Prasad (male) and Rudrakali (female) who are being transported to Qatar are about 6 years old. Arrangements have been made to keep the elephants in houses with ACs built in the Qatar zoo.

‘Generally, elephants show reproductive capacity after 13 years. The reproductive age of humans and elephants is the same,’ said Acharya. Two elephants from Chitwan National Park and a veterinarian who will accompany the elephants will also stay in Qatar for a month. They will return after teaching the elephant keeper at the Qatar Zoo all the elephant behaviors.

The temperature in Qatar usually remains above 45 degrees. Arrangements have been made to keep the elephants there at a temperature similar to the weather in Chitwan National Park, where they are currently growing. The Qatar government has also made arrangements to ship the grass used to feed the elephants at the Qatar Zoo from India or Nepal.
