Bardiya National Park has released 10 crocodiles into the Khauraha River. A joint team including Buddhi Sagar Poudel, Director General of the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, and Puran Bhakta Ghale, Assistant Lieutenant General of the Directorate of Wildlife Reserves, released the crocodiles into the river.
The crocodiles were released from the Gharial Breeding Center located in Thakurdwara, the headquarters of Bardiya National Park, into the Khauraha River in the park's Kattas.
Bardiya National Park Information Officer and Senior Assistant Conservation Officer Saroj Mani Poudel said that 5 male and 5 female crocodiles were released into the river. He said that the crocodiles released are between 3 and 8 years old. There are 150 large and 70 small crocodiles in the Gharial Breeding Center.
Normally, a crocodile gives birth to up to eleven babies in a year. The government had listed the reptile Gharial crocodile in the list of protected wildlife according to the Wildlife Conservation Act 2029. A crocodile breeding center has been established in Bardiya National Park, which is the westernmost tourist destination in Nepal, for the conservation of crocodiles.
After the establishment of the breeding center, the park has started raising and caring for crocodiles in the park, the park has stated. Injured crocodiles found in the natural habitats of the Karnali and Babai rivers and abandoned crocodile eggs found on the river banks are being kept at the park's crocodile breeding center for proper care, which has helped in crocodile conservation.
