The Banana Business Association has submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer demanding a complete stop to the import of bananas from India. The banana traders along with the president of the association, Toplal Vick, have submitted a memorandum to Pragya Surendra Paudal with 6 points of demand.

The president of Banana Business Association Bardia Vick said that commercial banana farming is flourishing in the district. "For the past 14 years, the area of commercial banana cultivation has been expanding and now it has reached 500 hectares," President Wik said, "15,000 metric tons of bananas are produced in the district annually and 700 households are involved in banana cultivation."

Bananas are produced at a high cost due to lack of fertilizers, expensive labor and transportation costs. However, it is not possible for us Nepalese banana traders to compete with the cheap bananas coming from India. As a result, we have come to the administration with a six-point demand that bananas imported from India should be treated with disease," he said.

According to the Banana Business Association, 80 percent of commercial bananas are being cultivated in Gularia, 15 percent in Rajapur municipality and 5 percent in other municipalities. Banana farmers complain that despite the increase in production with the expansion of banana cultivation, there is no management of marketing and because bananas are imported cheaply from India, they face difficulty in selling bananas.

It is mentioned in the memorandum that 6 points of demand have been submitted including to completely stop the import of bananas from India at least until November, to tighten the plant quarantine and customs policy, and to protect the farmers of Nepali banana producers.
