What you should know

The Armed Police Force and the Nepal Police have arrested 46 people involved in drug dealing since July of the current financial year. One of the arrested is a woman.

During that period, 27 grams of brown sugar and 20 mg were recovered, police said. Similarly, Krishna Dangi, police constable of District Police Office, Bardia said that 2 grams of hashish is 690 mg.

Dangi said that after the local administration conducted a search operation to control drug smuggling from India last year, drug defendants were arrested.

The Indian border crossing with Bardia is 83 km long. Most of the drug trafficking has been through Baghaiyatal Rural Municipality, Gularia and Madhuwan Municipalities.

Since brown sugar is cheap in the Indian market, businessmen use to bring it into Nepal through the border. Those involved in drug trafficking have given a statement to the police that they are given 1000 for crossing the border, 1500 for reaching East-West Highway and 2500 for reaching Surkhet.

Even if up to 10 grams of drugs are arrested with brown sugar in India, the case will not proceed. Chief District Officer Surendra Paudel said that he will discuss with the Indian counterpart to control drugs in the counter part meeting.

He said that Indian security personnel have been arresting drug dealers from time to time from the border area. Similarly, 91 people including 3 women were arrested from the checkpoint in financial year 079/080, 207 people including 5 women in financial year 080/081 and 120 people including 1 woman were arrested with brown sugar in the last financial year.
