Rajapur Municipality-4 Dalighat has been affected by erosion after the water level in Karnali River has increased. According to the Irrigation and Water Resource Management Project (former Karnali River Management Project), about 200 meters of Karnali river has been eroded in Dalighat area.
According to hydromeasuring center, the water level in Karnali river rose by 7 meters on Friday morning. If it reaches more than 10 meters, it is considered a danger of flooding.
In order to prevent erosion in this area, including the water resources management project, local people have donated labor and temporarily embanked the embankment. Rajapur market is at high risk due to erosion. Engineer Navin Joshi said that this area is at risk of being flooded if there is a big flood.
Since the beginning of the rainy season, a temporary embankment has been constructed in the area where the river has eroded 200 meters so far, including projects and labor donations from local people. The Irrigation and Water Resources Management Project has said that boulders (large stones) accumulated in the river erosion area have been embanked. In addition, embankment has been made by filling sand in sacks. Sattighat bridge connecting Rajapur and Kailali is also at risk due to river erosion.
071 Karnali River Management Office was established on 29 October 2017 to prevent flood erosion in the Karnali River. Although the target is to complete 71 km of embankment within 5 years, due to lack of sufficient budget and negligence of the contractor company, about 15 km of embankment has been constructed. If the embankment is not built in time, Rajapur municipality is at risk of flooding and erosion, so the government needs to proceed with the work as soon as possible, says Kedar Thapa, the outgoing president of Bardiya Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
