The embankment to protect the bridge built at Sattighat on the Karnali river connecting Kailali via Rajapur in the district is being done. As river erosion causes rapid erosion on the east side of the bridge, an embankment has been built on the river bank with boulders brought from Kailali to prevent this.
The Gavin Bridge, built five years ago to prevent river erosion, was at risk after collapsing as the flow of water increased. The embankment has been built at the place where Gavin of the embankment was built to prevent the erosion of the east side of the bridge.
Hulaki road connected to Gavin Bhasie bridge along with the embankment was cut and the river could flow from the bank and was prevented by dropping stones last year. There is a rapid flow of the river around the place located in Rajapur municipality. More than a dozen villages, including Sargashnagar, Muktakamaiya Basti, Chediya, are at high risk due to heavy flooding.
As the water level rises, there is a risk of erosion in the coastal area of the Karnali River. The Hulaki project said that the embankment was done by dropping boulders for the embankment as the Hulaki road on the last span side of the bridge would be eroded due to the high flow of water in the east.
There has been no major flood in Karnali for the past two years. It is estimated that this year there will be heavy rains and floods. The bridge collapsed four years ago. With the collapse, the South East Bridge was at risk. Locals said that even though the collapsed bridge was rebuilt, it was not safe.
Seven years ago, the 531 meter long bridge was built at a cost of 46 crores. This bridge has 14 pillars under the Hulaki road project. The Karnali river has started flowing towards the east by changing its course towards the west. Leela Bahadur Bhandari, head of the postal project, said that embankment work has been done for 180 million in the bridge and nearby erosion areas.
Because the flow of water is high, the river control is being done by dropping big stones. The embankment will protect the bridge and the surrounding area. As large stones were not found in Bardia, they were brought from Kailali.
