A two-day Buddhist economic summit has begun in Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. Chief Minister Chetnarayan Acharya inaugurated the conference organized by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Transport of Lumbini Province and Lumbini Buddhist University on Friday.

Lumbini Buddhist University has informed that the economic summit was held focusing on the economic development of Lumbini province and Buddhist tourism. Seven working papers related to Buddhist philosophy, economic development and tourism will be presented in the two-day conference on Friday and Saturday. 

Chief Minister Acharya said Gautam Buddha's teachings are based on compassion, morality, middle path and social justice and emphasized that it should be made universal. He said that the conference provided an opportunity for serious debate and discussion in the light of Buddhist education in the search for sustainable development, green economy, social justice and economic approach based on human welfare. 

He also informed that the provincial government has initiated a multi-faceted plan to tour the entire province for tourists coming to Buddha's birthplace. "We are confident that Lumbini can be developed as a base," he said. Suvarnalal Bajracharya said that a promotional program is being made to introduce educational tourism in Lumbini. He said that projects like construction of Tripitaka Park, Devdah Education Development Project will help academic as well as tourism development. Vice-Chancellor Bajracharya pointed out the need for coordination between the state government and the university and emphasized that promotional programs should be done in cooperation. Speaking at the

conference, National Planning Commission member Dr. Prakash Kumar Shrestha pointed out the need for tourist attraction areas and accommodation facilities for tourism promotion. He said that tourism cannot develop until there are natural, cultural and historical structures that tourists can enjoy. 

He said that there is a need for service infrastructure to be a working place for Indian tourists in the hilly areas of Lumbini province by making high use of information technology. He emphasized that the main destination of Lumbini province is Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, and that publicity should be increased at the international level for its promotion. 

Lumbini Buddhist University Registrar Dr. Tilakram Acharya said that it is necessary to carry out research activities such that the research of the university falls under the policy plan of the government. He asserted that the university is ready for cooperation with the provincial government, saying that the university will conduct research for the promotion, identification and development of the tourist areas of the province including Lumbini.
