As the business activity has decreased, about 150 mid-level hotels have been closed in Nepalgunj in the past three years. Even though big investment star hotels are being added, the profession of middle-level hoteliers in Nepalgunj is in crisis. Hotelier Bhim Kandel of Nepalgunj said that hundreds of citizens working there lost their jobs due to the closure of mid-level hotels.
According to him, even though it is expected that the hotel business will decline after the end of the Covid-19 epidemic, one and a half hundred medium-level hotels have been closed in Nepalgunj, while even star-level hotels have not been able to operate properly.
'Nepalgunj is the center of three provinces in western Nepal, friends who once enthusiastically invested in the hotel sector are now in trouble,' said Kandel, who is the first vice-president of the Lumbini Province Committee of the Hoteliers' Association.
Ranga Bahadur Khadka, president of the Banke Hoteliers' Association, said that the hoteliers in Nepalgunj are facing a crisis due to economic stagnation after the Covid-19 epidemic. "It is hardly full for one or two days in a month, other days are empty," Chairman Khadka said, "This has forced us to close because we are unable to cover the rent, loan, interest and staff expenses."
There are a large number of mid-level hotels operating in Nepalgunj with a minimum investment of two lakhs to two crores. President Khadka says that hundreds of citizens have lost their jobs due to the closure of middle-class hotels.
President of Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry Tank Dhami said that after the implementation of federalism, the provincial level government and non-government offices in Nepalgunj were shifted to Butwal and Dang, there has been a decrease in business activity here. He said that the provincial and local governments should bring a relief package targeting the hotel business which is facing financial crisis.
