In the last fiscal year, 9,447 foreign tourists entered Nepal via the eastern border crossing at Kakarbhitta by land.
According to Indra Kumar Rajbanshi, acting chief of the Kakarbhitta Immigration Office, an average of 26 foreign tourists per day entered Nepal through this checkpoint during that period. As visas are not mandatory for citizens of neighboring India, the number of Indian tourists is not included in this data.
Although citizens of a total of 86 countries traveled through the checkpoint, the highest number of arrivals were Bhutanese tourists. Bhutanese citizens accounted for 53 percent of total arrivals, or 4,994 people. Similarly, American citizens were in second place, with 23 percent or 2,152 tourists entering Nepal, according to acting chief Rajbanshi.
According to the office, the months of Poush and Magh are considered the main tourist season at the eastern border. The highest number of tourists entered Nepal in Poush, with 1,850 arrivals, while the lowest was in Bhadra, with only 216 arrivals.
Acting chief Rajbanshi said that the influx increases during Poush and Magh because Bhutan observes winter holidays during these months, and Bhutanese citizens come to visit relatives in Jhapa and surrounding areas, as well as to visit and undertake pilgrimages to Halesi Mahadev in Khotang, known as the Pashupatinath of the east.
The Immigration Office stated that, as full immigration services at this checkpoint only began in August 2024, many foreign tourists are still not sufficiently aware of the possibility of using this border crossing.
