Surprise inspections were carried out at hotels in the Hulaktole area of Dhankuta district headquarters on Wednesday.

A joint team led by the District Administration Office Dhankuta, including Dhankuta Municipality, the Office of Cottage and Small Industries, and the Division Office of Food Technology and Quality Control, conducted the inspection. During the inspection, one hotel was fined Rs 15,000 after it was found to be negligent in cleanliness and using old oil for cooking. In addition, expired food items and prepared foods were confiscated and destroyed from various hotels.

According to Dhankuta’s Assistant Chief District Officer Laxmi Prasad Regmi, Kafle Hotel in Dhankuta was fined Rs 15,000 under the Consumer Protection Act after it was found that the kitchen was not cleaned and food was being cooked in repeatedly used old oil. Similarly, the team stated that expired food items and inedible prepared foods found in various hotels were confiscated and destroyed.

According to Assistant Chief District Officer Laxmi Prasad Regmi, the surprise inspection was conducted after continuous complaints from consumers regarding the services of hotels and restaurants. He said that some hotels were found not to have price lists, not following food hygiene standards, and selling inedible items.

The team instructed hotel operators to maintain food hygiene, not to sell expired food items, and to display price lists mandatorily. He stated that strict legal action would be taken if such shortcomings are repeated. Regmi said that the inspection was carried out to ensure the sale of quality, safe, and hygienic food items in hotels in the area, as there is a high influx of patients and their attendants around the district hospital.
