The work on the modern cold storage center under construction for the safe storage of fruits and vegetables in Mahalaxmi Municipality of Dhankuta has reached its final stage.

Preparations are underway to bring the cold storage center under construction in Municipality-1, Katahare, with a special grant of Rs 9.75 crore from the federal government, into operation from the coming winter.

The municipality has stated that about 70 percent of the construction of the two-story state-of-the-art building with a storage capacity of about five hundred thousand kilos of fruits and vegetables has been completed. The cold storage was built with the aim of ensuring that local farmers can keep their agricultural produce safe at a certain temperature and humidity for a long time and sell it at a reasonable price.

Mahalaxmi Municipality Mayor Dhruvraj Rayamajhi said that arrangements will be made to store agricultural produce when there is a lot of production and sell it in the market when it gets a good price. According to him, once the cold storage is operational, farmers will no longer have to sell their produce at a cheap price immediately.

According to the technician involved in the construction, the temperature and humidity will be controlled through a computer system at the center. There will be arrangements to maintain different temperatures required for different types of fruits and vegetables. The center will also be equipped with insulated panels, a well-organized alternative power system, balanced airflow, storage racks, and necessary infrastructure for loading and unloading. The high-capacity power system required for alternative energy has also been brought in.

Mahalaxmi Municipality, which is considered a leader in fruit and vegetable production, has been producing potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, green beans, tomatoes, avocados, mangoes, bananas, and mangoes commercially. However, due to the lack of cold storage facilities, farmers are forced to sell their produce immediately at low prices.

According to Mayor Rayamajhi, all wards of the municipality are connected to the cold storage through unpaved roads. It is believed that the utility of the cold storage will increase further with the upgrading of the roads. He said that there is a plan to prepare clear procedures for operation and manage it with the participation of the local community.

It is expected that after the operation of the cold storage, the problems of rotting, decay and deterioration of the quality of the produce will be reduced, it will be easier to supply large markets and processing industries regularly, it will help to make the agricultural business commercial and it will also create employment opportunities at the local level.

Bhupal Raya, a farmer from Katahare, expressed his belief that the situation of farmers' produce rotting and being wasted will end after the operation of the cold storage. He said that since the produce can be kept safe and sold at a good price in the market, the farmers of Mahalaxmi can directly benefit from this.
