The main causes of road accidents in Koshi Province are driver negligence, speeding and traffic rule violations.
According to the details of the current fiscal year 2082/83, up to Ashad 15, 6,150 road accidents have occurred across the province, resulting in 421 deaths, 735 serious injuries and 9,529 minor injuries.
According to the data of the Koshi Province Traffic Police Office, 1,715 accidents have occurred due to driver negligence alone. Similarly, 2,667 accidents have occurred due to speeding, 546 due to passenger error, 425 due to drunkenness and 266 due to vehicle mechanical malfunction. In addition, the data shows that 281 accidents have occurred due to road conditions, 149 due to overtaking, 49 due to quadrupeds, 17 due to overload and 35 due to adverse weather conditions. The data has confirmed that human error is the main cause of accidents.
Superintendent of Police of the Koshi Province Traffic Police Office, Deepak Giri, informed that most of the accidents occurred due to driver carelessness, disregard for speed control and non-compliance with traffic rules.
The three main districts of the province are the epicenters of accidents. Morang has the highest number of accidents with 2,143, Jhapa with 1,453 and Sunsari with 1,398. About 80 percent of the accidents in the province are concentrated in these three districts alone. In terms of human casualties, 111 people have lost their lives in Morang, 114 in Sunsari and 73 in Jhapa.
According to Superintendent of Police, Giri, the increasing traffic pressure on the East-West Highway, Koshi Highway and urban roads, rapid urbanization, high-speed vehicle operation, lack of road discipline and driver negligence are increasing the risk of accidents. Effective traffic management and rule enforcement are essential to reduce accidents, especially in Morang, Sunsari and Jhapa, where there is a lot of vehicle traffic. Giri said that although they are working in coordination with various agencies for that, it is not enough.
The statistics indicate that with the expansion of roads and the increase in the number of vehicles, the accident rate may increase further unless there is improvement in driver behavior, strict enforcement of traffic rules, regular vehicle inspections, and strengthening of road safety infrastructure.
The traffic police have urged drivers to control their speed, avoid drunk driving, fully comply with traffic rules, and undergo regular technical inspections of vehicles, and have stated that public awareness and strict monitoring will be made more effective to reduce accidents. However, Giri says that this is challenging due to the mentality that the work of reducing accidents is only the responsibility of the traffic police.
