Dhankuta Municipality has honored and awarded a cash prize to the only female tempo driver in the city who is actively working in the public transport sector.
The municipality honored Trishna Rai, 36, of Tomuwa, Dhankuta Municipality-7, with a cash prize of Rs 6,000. Deputy Chief of the District Coordination Committee Dhankuta, Sabitra Rai, and Deputy Chief of Dhankuta Municipality, Bhima Devi Khanal, among others, handed over the certificate of honor and cash.
The municipality said that Rai was honored for playing an active role as the only female driver in the public transport service and making a significant contribution to women's employment, self-reliance and empowerment.
Rai, who has been working as a tempo driver for the past two years, said that she started her business by purchasing a tempo by investing Rs 350,000 to manage household expenses. She says that she earns Rs 35,000 to 40,000 per month from operating a tempo.
'I chose this profession because I believed that I could earn something by working rather than sitting idle at home,' Rai said.
Saying that her confidence and courage have increased after being honored by the municipality, she expressed the view that women should strive to become self-reliant, regardless of whether they consider any profession to be small or big.
