Dhankuta Municipality has started discussions with stakeholders to achieve the indicators under the Sustainable Development Goals.
The municipality is working by prioritizing poverty alleviation, quality education, health and gender equality among the 17 indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals. After collecting basic data, discussions and suggestions were collected on the policies, plans, challenges and possibilities to be adopted in the coming days.
According to the municipality, the mortality rate of pregnant women, infants and children under the age of five has been reduced to zero. Access to vaccination has reached 100 percent and 99.74 percent of women have institutional deliveries. Similarly, 92 percent of consumers are using tap water and 84 percent of citizens have access to safe toilets.
However, the data has been made public that 11.3 percent of citizens in the municipality are still below the poverty line. According to the municipality's information officer, development officer, employment creation, lack of financial resources, increasing migration, climate change, limited access to technology, and inequality in awareness are the main challenges to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The United Nations announced the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. 17 goals have been set for ending poverty, quality education, health, gender equality, clean water, environmental protection, and building a prosperous society worldwide. The government of Nepal has also been operating programs according to the same concept through the federal, provincial, and local levels.
Since there is an international commitment to achieve these goals by 2030, local levels need to develop fact-based plans, effective budget management, and increase community participation, participants in the program said. The municipality has stated that a report will be prepared based on the suggestions received from the interaction, a plan will be made accordingly, and implementation will be carried out.
