The Chaubise Rural Municipality has taken up rose farming as a campaign. The rural municipality has launched the 'Rose Park' program with the aim of home decoration, enhancing tourist beauty and expanding commercial production.
The rural municipality has established a nursery by collecting 18 different species of roses that bloom according to the season. Rose plants of various colors including red, yellow, and white are currently growing in the nursery. This year alone, the rose nursery has been expanded to an area of about 10 ropanis, said Chitranjan Yadav, head of the agriculture branch of Chaubise Rural Municipality.
The Rajarani, Mudhebas, Saure, and Chhanambar Budhabare border areas of Chaubise Rural Municipality are known for their ecotourism and natural beauty. It is expected that expanding rose gardens in those areas will attract domestic and foreign tourists. Chaubise Rural Municipality Chairman Rajkumar Limbu says that the rural municipality has taken up flower farming as a potential area not only related to agriculture but also to tourism.
Chitranjan Yadav, head of the rural municipality's agriculture department, said that there is a plan to expand rose gardens in every house. According to him, the campaign is being taken to the grassroots level as roses are useful for welcoming visitors, beautifying the yard and protecting the environment.
He said that rose farming can create additional income opportunities for local farmers. 'The demand for roses is being linked to weddings, gatherings, hotels, religious programs and gift culture,' Yadav said. 'If it can be produced commercially, farmers can earn good income.'
According to Babunandan Mehta, the rural municipality's chief administrative officer, a program is being run with the support of the state government and the rural municipality's own investment to promote rose farming. He said that the rural municipality is also paying attention to modern nurseries, technical training and market management.
Rural municipality chairman Limbu said that there is a big market for roses in cities including Dharan and Biratnagar and that commercial production will be expanded in the coming days. 'We are planning to expand both the nursery and the farm and connect local products with the market,' he said. According to him, bouquets and various floral materials used for decoration and gifts in Nepal are being imported from abroad in large quantities. Chaubise Rural Municipality has set a goal to replace imports by increasing rose production locally.
According to Chitraranjan Yadav, head of the agriculture branch, rose farming is one of the flowers that provides good income even in small areas. Once a garden is established in a systematic manner, it can become an attractive business for farmers as it can be produced for a long time. Yadav says that it is expected to contribute to job creation as it can be used to prepare nurseries, cut flowers, garlands, bouquets and beauty products from roses.
Chaubise Rural Municipality is expanding the campaign with the aim of strengthening the rural economy by linking rose farming with agriculture, tourism and entrepreneurship, says the rural municipality chairman Limbu.
