People's representatives, stakeholders and businessmen of Duhabi Municipality, which falls under the Sunsari-Morang Industrial Corridor, have expressed their commitment to cooperate in achieving sustainable development goals while respecting environmental protection and human rights.

Participants of the interaction program on environment and human rights organized by the Informal Sector Service Center (INSEC) Koshi Province and coordinated by Duhabi Municipality on Monday issued a joint commitment letter.

They have pledged to fully respect the basic principles of human rights and follow the legal system while operating industries, factories and professions. Similarly, emphasis has also been placed on the implementation of national and international commitments related to environmental rights.

The topic of developing an effective mechanism for hearing and resolving complaints related to human rights violations and taking initiatives to ensure basic rights such as life, health, food, water and sanitation has also been covered. The commitment letter emphasizes the effective implementation of existing laws including the Environmental Protection Act 2076, Environmental Protection Regulations 2077, and Waste Management Act 2068.

It also states that cooperation will be provided for the full implementation of environmental rights as per the Local Government Operation Act 2074. The participants stated that they will continue to be active in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals to minimize the impact of climate change on human life and nature, expand easy access to clean water, sanitation, clean energy, and be committed to biodiversity conservation.

At the program, Duhabi Municipality Mayor Ved Narayan Gachhadar said that after the power to regulate industries was transferred to the provincial government, conflicts have arisen between industrialists and locals in the name of industrial pollution.
