The traditional game of Bagchal has added attraction to the Kopche Festival here. On the occasion of the New Year, children, youth and the elderly are enjoying the game of Bagchal at the fourth edition of the Kopche Festival organized by the Kopche Renaissance Campaign of Dhankuta.

While the influence of modern games and technology is increasing, there is an attraction towards the traditional and original game of Bagchal. The strategic game Bagchal is estimated to have started since the Lichchhavi period. Secretary of the organizing Kopche Renaissance Campaign, Ujwal Karmacharya, informed that the Bagchal game was organized for the promotion and entertainment of the original game.

In this game, which is played between four tigers and twenty goats, the strategy is adopted that the tiger eats the goats and the goats surround the tiger and control it. Secretary of the organizing committee, Karmacharya, said that this develops the thinking, patience and planning ability of the players.

In the past, Bagchal was not only entertainment but also a means of social gathering in the villages. It was customary for villagers to gather and play this game after farming or during festivals. It was customary to set up a pavilion at gatherings and meetings, and to play Bagchal for entertainment when people were tired even in the field.

Officials of the organizing committee say that the game was organized to revive the game of Bagchal as it is being lost to the next generation. Organizers say that giving priority to Bagchal in the Kopche Festival will help in the preservation and promotion of original games.

The festival, which began on the eve of the New Year on Chaitra 30th at the Thuyur Haat in Dhankuta district headquarters, will conclude on Wednesday.
