The first and biggest festival of the year, 'Bishu' (Baishakhe festival), has begun for the marginalized Kirat Aathpahariya community, who live only in Dhankuta.
Bishu is celebrated as the main festival in the Kirat Aathpahariya community. On this occasion, they have a tradition of performing Pitru Puja in memory of their deceased ancestors. They pray for the salvation and well-being of the souls of their ancestors and perform special rituals.
On the occasion of the festival, special rituals and ground-breaking ceremonies are also performed at Margathan in Dhankuta's Thuyurde Haat. During this, religious rituals are performed with the participation of community leaders and priests.
After the Bishu festival, the Aathpahariya community has maintained the tradition of celebrating important festivals on the full moon days of Bhadau and Mangsir.
The population of the Aathpahariya community, who live only in Dhankuta, is estimated to be around 6,000. This community, which has been preserving its original culture and traditions, celebrates the Bishu festival with special enthusiasm.
