After the bird flu infection was confirmed in the Terai districts, stricter measures have been taken at the Bhedetar checkpoint in Dhankuta to prevent its spread to the hilly districts of Koshi. The District Administration Office, Dhankuta, has increased surveillance by banning the transportation of chickens and poultry products.

According to Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Khadka, vigilance has been taken after infections were detected in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari. 'The Bhedetar checkpoint has been tightened to prevent the spread of the infection,' he said.

Chickens are transported through the Bhedetar checkpoint to Dhankuta, Tehrathum, Sankhuwasabha, Bhojpur, Khotang and the Tamor-Kabeli corridor to Panchthar and Taplejung. The administration has stated that surveillance has been tightened after the risk of illegal chickens entering through this route has increased.

Dhankuta Superintendent of Police Sarat Kumar Thapa Chhetri informed that chickens, ducks and eggs without a health certificate and recommendation issued by the Animal Services Department are not allowed to enter. "It has been found that attempts are being made to import chickens from places including India in the name of Itahari. If chickens are found without a health certificate and recommendation, they are returned," he said.

A police team including animal health technicians has been mobilized in Bhedetar for inspection. In addition, Sangurigadhi Rural Municipality has also said that it has deployed animal health technicians to increase surveillance. Dron Rai, head of the rural municipality's planning department, informed that a joint team of the local level and the police is conducting regular inspections.
