A sheep tourism festival is to be organized on Baisakh 1 in Phalelung Rural Municipality-4 Charrate, located on the Nepal-India border in Panchthar.
The festival, which has been organized for the past nine years on the occasion of the New Year, has been continued this year as well. The festival has been organized here since 2073 BS to showcase and promote sheep and sheep products along with sheep and sheep products found in the Himalayan region.
The festival, which is being organized by Phalelung Rural Municipality, is being organized in Phalelung-4 Charrate, located at an altitude of about 3,500 meters above sea level, informed Mahendrahang Jabegu, the vice-chairman of the rural municipality.
The main organizers and promoters of the festival said that more than 600 sheep and sheep products will be exhibited in the ninth edition of the sheep festival on Friday.
Stalls of ghee, chhurpi, cheese and other chauri products will be set up at the festival. In addition, activities such as yak and horse riding will also be conducted, the organizer has stated.
Vice President Jabegu said that the festival was organized with the aim of conserving chauri and its species, which are the main source of income in the Himalayan region, as well as promoting and marketing chauri products. The Chauri Tourism Festival has been organized every year on New Year's Day in the place established as a chauri pocket area, with the Phalelung Rural Municipality as the promoter.
Although a three-day program has been scheduled for the festival this year from Chait 30 to Baisakh 2, the main activities will be conducted on the first day of the new year, i.e. Baisakh 1. The main organizer is the Kanchenjunga Yak Cheese Producer Group, Falelung-4, Charatte.
The festival, which is hosted by Falelung Rural Municipality, is being promoted by the Ministry of Tourism, Forest and Environment of Koshi Province, Trekking-Based Tourism Development Project, Biratnagar, Koshi Province Tourism Year 2082 Secretariat, Falelung Ecotourism Promotion and Development Organization, Deep Jyoti Youth Club, and Kanchenjunga Goat Herders and Development Organization, Panchthar.
The organizers have stated that the festival aims to attract more than five thousand tourists from various districts of Nepal as well as from various countries via Punjab, West Bengal, Kolkata, and Bhutan in India.
A friendly football competition between horse riders, yak riders, and goat herders, a yak dance, and a hurtuk-firing program will also be organized at the festival. The organizers have stated that the winner of the football tournament, which will be held at an altitude of 3,400 meters, will receive 40 kg of ghee and the runner-up will receive 20 kg.
