Land that had been blocked for two years for the construction of an airport in Dharan Sub-metropolitan City-17, Dandaghopa, has been released.

Former mayor of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City, Harkaraj Rai (Sampang), had decided to stop the recommendation for the sale and distribution of land in that area on Bhadra 11, 2080, saying that an airport would be built. Due to this decision, land belonging to more than a thousand households in Dharan Sub-metropolitan City-17, Dandaghopa, was blocked. According to acting mayor of Dharan Sub-metropolitan City, Aindra Bikram Begha, the blocking of land other than the land in the name of Yeti Incorporated Pvt. Ltd. has been released since Tuesday following a request from a local landowner. Acting mayor Begha informed that the decision regarding the release has been sent to Ward No. 17 Office, Land Revenue and Survey Office.

Yeti Incorporated had purchased about seven bighas of land in Dandaghopa about 22 years ago with a plan to build an airport. The airport construction could not proceed as there was no clear legal provision allowing private companies to build the airport. Locals who had sold land for the airport at a cheap price had been demanding that their land be returned after the airport was not built. 22 years ago, Yeti Incorporated had purchased land from about 29 households for between Rs 28,000 and Rs 32,000 per plot with a plan to build the airport.

During the feasibility study for the airport construction, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal concluded that it was technically not suitable to build an airport in Dandaghopa, and the said project was in doubt. Recently, the re-study process was taken forward under the direction of the then Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Sudan Kirati.

The Authority had formed a three-member team on 23 Kartik 2080 under the coordination of Manager Nal Bikram Thapa and started the study by forming a three-member team comprising Senior Legal Officer Bimal Khanal and Chartered Accountant Anil Basnet. The team conducted an on-site study of the proposed airport area on 21 Mangsir 2080.

The team conducted the study based on past reports. The Authority had sent a letter to the Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City on Asad 1, 2074 BS, stating that approximately 93.25 bighas of land would be required to build an airport for an ATR-42 aircraft. The team had concluded that more land would be required since the aircraft currently operating have a capacity of 72 seats.
