Many verbal complaints of election code of conduct violations in Dhankuta

As the House of Representatives elections approach, complaints regarding violations of the election code of conduct have started to increase in Dhankuta.

Election Code of Conduct Monitoring Coordinator Laxmi Prasad Regmi said that 10 verbal and 2 written complaints have been received in Dhankuta so far. 

Most of the complaints received in the office are verbal.  The process of formally asking for clarification on the matters of written complaints has been taken forward.

Assistant Chief District Officer and Election Code of Conduct Monitoring Coordinator Laxmi Prasad Regmi informed that a written explanation has been sought from the candidates and parties concerned based on the written complaint.

A complaint has been filed against Nepali Congress candidate for House of Representatives Dinesh Rai Aathpahariya on charges of distributing hats with the aim of influencing voters. The complaint was filed by a representative of the Nepali Communist Party.

Similarly, CPN-UML Dhankuta had filed a complaint against its candidate for making personal abuse, defamation and malicious comments by mentioning a wrong phone number on social media.

Based on the same complaint, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer stated that it has asked independent candidate Lakpa Tamang for a written explanation.

Code of Conduct Monitoring Coordinator Regmi said that a preliminary investigation is underway to provide necessary instructions and awareness regarding such complaints. According to him, a formal process will be adopted for written complaints, and in the case of oral complaints, discussions and awareness have been practiced at the initial level.

The administration has said that it has increased monitoring to ensure compliance with the code of conduct as campaigning activities are intensifying as the election approaches. The office has also urged all parties and candidates to fully comply with the code of conduct.
