Problems in bringing bodies of victims of Meghalaya coal mine explosion to Nepal

Three youths have lost their lives and one more is missing in a coal mine explosion in Meghalaya, India. Two others have been seriously injured in the incident.

Purniram Khapangi Magar, 27, Surendra Khapangi Magar, 24, and Nar Bahadur Khapangi Magar, 35, of Bhanjyang, Salghari, Barapokhari Rural Municipality-1, Meghalaya, died in an explosion at an illegal coal mine in East Jayantiya Hills on Magh 22.

It has been reported that Ratna Rai, 50, of Jorkafal, Halesi Tuwachung Municipality-5, Durchhim, who was involved in the explosion while working inside the coal mine, has gone missing. It is reported that Rai, who went missing after the explosion, may have died after being burned to death inside the coal mine.

According to relatives from Bhojpur who have been working with him in Meghalaya, Durchhim youth leader Netra Bikram Raut said that the explosion was reported when Ratna entered the coal mine. The bodies found inside the coal mine during the rescue operation after the explosion were charred beyond recognition, and relatives who were staying there have informed the family.

It is reported that the citizenship, diary and mobile phone of Ratna, who disappeared in the explosion, were found in the room. Relatives have informed that Ratna, who disappeared in the coal mine, went to Meghalaya on Asoj-9 for employment. Local Shiva Kumar Shrestha informed that it was received that Nar Bahadur, who was seriously injured in the explosion, died on Magh 23 during treatment.

Local Indra Limel Magar informed that Purniram and Surendra, who lost their lives on the day of the incident, were brothers from the same house. Karna Bahadur Khapangi Magar, 46, of Salghari, Barapokhari Rural Municipality-1, Bam Bahadur Khapangi Magar, 40, of Bhanjyang, and Lalit Lungeli Magar, 40, of Udayapur, Saune, are seriously injured in the explosion. They are being treated at a local health facility in Meghalaya, said Tarabal Magar of Walampa in Rahpokhari, who has been working with them. 

Relatives of the deceased said that Tarabal informed them about the incident over the phone after the blast.  Family members are facing difficulties in bringing the body of the Khotang youth who lost his life in the blast to Nepal from Meghalaya. 

Prakash Khapangi Magar, a relative of the deceased, informed that he took three days from home to Meghalaya, India, after receiving the information that his relative had died in the blast.  Local Prakash Banjara informed that a campaign to collect donations has been launched to bring the body home and treat the seriously injured.
