What you should know

A 'Mango Block Development Program' is being launched to promote commercial mango farming in the lower areas of Teliya and Tankhuwa under Chhatharjorpati Rural Municipality of Dhankuta.

The Koshi Province Ministry of Industry, Agriculture and Cooperatives has approved the block development program by determining the area.

The program was taken forward as per the secretary-level decision of the ministry and proposals were sought from the farmer groups after on-site monitoring, according to the Agriculture Knowledge Center Dhankuta.

Farmers in the Teliya-Tankhuwa area had submitted a proposal to the knowledge center for the expansion of mango cultivation. According to Deepak Pariyar, a farmer from the Teliya Guth, local farmers are enthusiastic about cultivating mangoes commercially.

Nagendra Rana, head of the Agriculture Knowledge Center Dhankuta, said that the ministry informed about the program approval through a letter. According to him, the program will be operated in the Sibhuwa and Teliya areas of Chhatharjorpati-3 and 4.

Four forts have also been designated for block development. Mango cultivation will be expanded in an area of about 1,400 ropanis falling within the Tankhuwa River, Teliya and Thepung Rivers, Tamor River and the Kattikekhola-Kawgaun blacktop road, informed Abhimanyu Adhikari, Agricultural Extension Officer of the Koshi Province Ministry of Industry, Agriculture and Cooperatives.

Under the program, a minimum of 50 to a maximum of 80 percent of the cost of mango cultivation will be provided by the government, while the remaining amount will be raised through farmer participation.

It is expected that the production will be easier to reach the market as the blacktop road from the Dhankuta district headquarters has been expanded in the mango cultivation area. Nagendra Rana, head of the Agricultural Knowledge Center, Dhankuta, says that the barren land that is being emptied due to migration will be utilized properly and commercial fruit farming will help improve the income and living standards of farmers.
