Koshi Province Government's 'Roaming Hospital'

What you should know

The Koshi Provincial Government has started a new practice of delivering healthcare services to the doorsteps of the general public in rural settlements where it is difficult to reach hospitals. The first-ever ‘Koshi Mobile Hospital’, launched by the provincial government, officially started its journey from Kamal Rural Municipality of Jhapa on Friday.

Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki inaugurated the service, which was prepared by converting a large bus into a mobile hospital.

The bus is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for radiology services, heart X-rays, blood tests, and blood sample collection and testing, which has made it possible to provide not only primary health care, but also basic checkups.

According to Astha Thapa, Nursing Administrator of the Provincial Health Directorate, this mobile hospital will be particularly useful for conducting regular treatment as well as emergency and immediate health camps during epidemics. Chief Minister Karki also said that this service will be gradually expanded to provide easy access to villages.  'This is the embodiment of the concept that health care should reach the people,' he said.

The provincial government has a plan to further refine this mobile hospital, which has been discussed as the first and exemplary initiative in Nepal, and effectively reach the general public. Health Minister Man Bahadur Limbu expressed his commitment to do work that can be directly seen and felt in the health sector.

According to Gyan Bahadur Basnet, Director of the Health Directorate, the bus has been converted into a hospital at a cost of about 8 million rupees. Along with the inauguration of the mobile hospital, a free health camp has also been organized by the Health Directorate in Kamal Rural Municipality.
