Keshar Bahadur Budhathoki of Banjhechyandanda, Sakela Rural Municipality-1, has obtained a citizenship certificate at the age of 70. Born on Falgun 7, 2013, he obtained his citizenship certificate for the first time from the District Administration Office on Sunday.

She said that she took citizenship even though it was late because her daughters were deprived of education, health and employment because she did not have a Nepali citizenship certificate.

'When I was young (14 years old), I ran away from home with my friends and went to India in search of employment. After returning from there, I came to Kanchanpur and started working as a laborer. While working there, I married a local, Leela Bhatta,' he said, 'We have two daughters, aged 22 and eight. The eldest daughter is currently studying in class 12. I came to the district to take citizenship because she needed my citizenship.'

Keshar Bahadur, who returned to the district 56 years after leaving home, has been granted citizenship by the administration on the identification of his eldest brother Madan Bahadur. 'I was not educated. What good would it do to get citizenship? But, my daughters are facing problems because I do not have citizenship!', Keshar Bahadur said, 'Even if I do not do anything, I feel that I should do something for my daughters. But I did not have citizenship. With everyone's help, I have received a citizenship certificate from the District Administration Office today.'

The citizenship certificate received after almost seven decades has added new hope to Keshar Bahadur's family, said his nephew Shyam Kumar. 'My uncle, who had been out of contact since a young age, came home after 56 years. The family is happy after a person who had been out of contact for a long time came home,' he said, 'He had no evidence to make citizenship. We spent about a week collecting all the evidence. Today, he is happy after the District Administration Office gave his uncle a Nepali citizenship certificate.'

Keshar Bahadur said that after receiving the Nepali citizenship certificate, he is preparing to register his wife's marriage and his daughters' births. Keshar Bahadur, who built a house on the land given by his in-laws after marriage and lives in Kanchanpur, is studying in class-3.'

The District Administration Office has stated that problems are seen in children born in many families in the district when parents do not make citizenship due to lack of awareness. Chief District Officer Rekha Kandel said that she created a comfortable environment upon her transfer to Khotang with the aim of ensuring that citizens are not deprived of obtaining a Nepali citizenship certificate.
