Dhankuta police have arrested a fugitive defendant in a manslaughter case 25 years after the incident.

Bhim Bahadur Tamang, 62, of Chaubise-3, Dhankuta, was arrested from Kerabari Rural Municipality-6, Morang, on Sunday.

Tamang was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Jestha 23, 2066, by the Dhankuta District Court on Kartik 2, 2057, for the murder of Tanka Prasad Pokharel, 57, of the then Kurule Tenupa VDC-8, now Chaubise Rural Municipality-4, after beating him.

Police have not found out that Tamang, who was under the influence of alcohol, beat Pokharel and then threw him into the Tamor River.

Tamang, who was absconding after the incident, was arrested in coordination with the Morang police after changing his name and identity and was hiding in Kerabari-6, Morang, and was produced before the court, said Dhankuta Police Information Officer Kishor Tamang.

The defendant Tamang also changed his name and obtained citizenship from Morang district in the name of Megh Bahadur Tamang, said Dhankuta SP Sharat Kumar Thapa Chhetri. Similarly, the police arrested another absconding defendant who was sentenced to 4 months and 11 days in prison and a fine of Rs 10,000 by the District Court Dhankuta on 2081 Asoj 2.

Madhav Prasad Baruwal, 60, of Pakhribas 1, Kunwartol, Dhankuta, was arrested and presented in court, according to the police.

Dhankuta police have arrested 27 defendants who were sentenced to 28 years, 6 months, 29 days in prison and a fine of Rs 1,687,550 by the court on charges including murder, manslaughter, rape, forest produce and banking offences in the five and a half months of the current fiscal year and presented them in court, informed SP Thapa Chhetri. Similarly, last year, Dhankuta police arrested 57 defendants who were sentenced to 48 years, 5 months, 10 days in prison and a fine of Rs 299,780 and presented them in court, Thapa Chhetri said.
