Dhankuta police have started a crackdown after complaints were received about the open sale and consumption of tobacco products in grocery stores and canteens near the school premises.

At a program organized at the District Police Office, Dhankuta on Tuesday, students present at the program organized by the Koshi Province Police Chief, Deputy Inspector General of Police Binod Ghimire, had made a verbal complaint to the DIG about the open sale and distribution of tobacco products in school premises and canteens. Students of Gokundeshwor Balmandir School who participated in the interaction program with the DIG complained that the control and regulation of tobacco products was weak.

Following the complaint, DIG Ghimire has instructed the Dhankuta Police to start work against the sale and sale of tobacco products in schools and educational institutions and the use of children.

The Tobacco Control and Regulation Act 2068 has made provisions that smoking and consumption of tobacco products and sale and distribution in public places including educational institutions, libraries, training centers, health institutions, child welfare homes, airports and others are prohibited. Dhankuta Police Chief SP Sharat Kumar Thapa Chhetri said that they have monitored schools in the district headquarters area and warned shop and canteen operators. He said that a public notice has been issued through miking.

‘We have strictly prohibited the sale and consumption of tobacco products within 200 meters of the school premises,’ he said, ‘Smoking and the sale of tobacco products are not allowed in the school premises. Tobacco products are not allowed to be sold to those under 18 years of age and pregnant women.’ There are rules that prohibit those who consume tobacco products in public places, and if they do not comply, they can be thrown out or fined up to one hundred rupees.
